| If you haven't already heard the Caligari website is no more. Microsoft finally killed 'em As of 8.7.2012 I was still able to download Truespace 7.6 from CNET at www.download.com Have used it to drop .bvh motion files onto meshes and glue them with a couple of clicks. You can string together multiple motions on the timeline and export to .X. Whether or not you like the workflow or interface of Truespace I would still highly recommend getting it while you still can. It may not be 3DS max but at least in the past it was one of the better tools ...and it's free. Cheers |

| I would strongly suggest that, rather than suffer the pain of using/learning the Truespace interface, and you want something more like 3DMax, try GMax. It is a cut down version of 3DMax, and it's FREE. What it mainly lacks is a rendering engine for the creation of shadows etc etc. |

| I've actually used GMax back when I was playing around with CNC mills, tools etc. Had an extension or plugin that ran inside and calculated a 5 axis toolpath for a 3D model.
Never cut anything with the toolpaths it made but it was cool to watch it work.
I'm not sure but is the GMax license compatible with commercial use or is it just for modding stuff?
If the license is Ok for commercial use I'll be downloading it again.
For me the appeal of Truespace 7.6 was in the ease of bvh<->mesh attachment. It was easy to compile and drag multiple motions on the timeline which exported perfectly for me to .X.
I animate/generate or import and mod my motions in Poser, export to bvh then just drag, drop and arrange the motions in Truespace.
I wouldn't recommend Truespace for modeling or UV texturing but it does have some other interesting tools. It is also good for commercial use afaik.
Cheers

| Having read the License Agreements (a second one is only relevant to the Beta GMax Tempest version), I could see no restrictions of use, commercial or otherwise. It does stipulate that each contributor must have their own copy, so it is not shared, or redistributed. This is usually included so AutoDesk can keep tabs on who is using their software.
Quote:
1. Grant of License. a. Installation and Use. Autodesk grants to you a personal, nonexclusive license to make and use the Software for the purpose of designing, developing, testing, and producing game content provided that you are the only individual or entity using said Software and provided that you do not modify or alter the Software. You may also make personal copies (either in hard copy or electronic form) of any electronic documents included with the Software only for your personal use on your premises. This license is not sublicenseable by you without Autodesk’s prior written permission. b. Storage/Network Use. You may also store or install a copy of the Software on a storage device, such as a network server, used only to install or run the Software on computers used by a licensed end user in accordance with Section 1.a. A single license for the Software may not be shared or used concurrently by other end users.
This is the 'bulk' of the agreement/restrictions regarding usage. |
