I have chosen to work on a shield, similar to that one:
Until now i have done the base shape.
It looks so:
For the additional details, i need a graphic tablet that will purchase that week! Thus, it will take me another month to finish that shield.

Ooh, that'll look nice when it's done
Good luck with that!
Which modelling program are you using? Is it Blender?

I plan to use more than one. And because Blender has many deficiencies in the modeling part, i plan not to use it.

No. It is from Magic: the Gathering.

Hello again!
That was one of those days, where (almost) all that could go wrong, happened!
I have firstly tried to sculpt the deatils of the shield. I have come to that stage:
, when i tried to sculpt the tree, which did not looked "right". After that, the retopology troubles began. Because the shield has an irregular shape and tiny, round walls, it was a nightmare to retopologyze it. After a few frustration failures, i have come to that UV-Map:
, which obviously needs more work. But it will be done tomorrow!

Round 10 000 polygons
It is the UV-map, again:
As you can see, the two big sides of the shield have way too many polygons. Today, i will try to reduce them. If you enlarge the picture, you will see many tiny polygons that are the side walls! They were the problematic ones. After that, will try to paint the UV-map in GIMP, because even after the poly reduction, the polygons will be a little too much for such a prop.

Another update: below you can find the newly UV-unwrapped shield model. That time, it has around 300 polygons.
I have lied about Blender in my earlier post, though. Exactly it us used for the UV-Unwrapping.
Tomorrow will search for a program that suits my texturing needs. Maybe GIMP will suit me, may be not. Time will tell !

I personally recommend GIMP, as it's incredibly easy to use. It's basically Photoshop, but free!

I hope you missed me !
Below is my finished attempt to model the shield from the first post. It was a long journey. There were many dangers and misfortunes, but your hero stay before you ... with his scratched shield! Hoping that it will not add additional scratches to it!
On a more serious note: if you have creative suggestions about the model, please write them here!
PS: i promise, the next time i will take only one month out !

Is there any movement with the model store?

Looking good! I especially like the cracks, they look very real...
The model store - I've been busy with other commitments recently, so work on the new website (and therefore the store) have been rather slow, I'm afraid. We have the framework in place, it's just a matter of sorting out the layout and the seller account settings. We're looking at perhaps 1-2 months until we think about opening the site to the public, and then another month after that for the marketplace.
In the meantime, feel free to put your assets/models in the Developer Marketplace section of the forum (Temporary Marketplace)

That's a great looking sheild.
10k polygons is a bit high IMO. You could achieve the same result with less than 100 polygons, using the rendering engine to create the smooth appearance.

Tristan: thanks for the clarifications.
AWM Mars: yes, 10 000 polys is excessive. Additionally, i am not sure that 100 polys is achiveable, when you make the high_poly->low_poly transition. As much as i know, 100 polys is achievable, only when the shield is maked low poly from the start, which is not my case. Thus, i'll shoot for 1 000 (eventually less).
